Atlus is a Japanese computer and video game developer and publisher. It is known for publishing the tactical RPG Tactics Ogre and developing/publishing the role-playing series Shin Megami Tensei. It purchased the rights to the Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio-Kun and Double Dragon franchises, which were started by the now-defunct Technos Japan Corporation. Other notable titles include Snowboard Kids and Snowboard Kids 2 for the Nintendo 64 and most recently, the Trauma Center series.
Atlus is strictly a publisher in the United States, oftentimes localizing obscure or niche titles from other Japanese developers. Atlus' most known work in the United States is their localization of the cult classic Hour of Darkness, which was created by Nippon Ichi Software.
The Megami Tensei franchise, their most well-known work, was originally acquired from Namcot. Atlus had nothing to do with the first two Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei games, which were released for the NES (although they did handle the Super Famicom remake of both games). The first Megami Tensei game was based on a trilogy of novels, while the second was an original story that shares similar themes to the original novels.
